PLAYING RULES OF PEIL ABÚ

1.1   Purpose of Rules/Principles of Fair Play

The Playing Rules of Peil Abú have been constructed so that they are easy to read, remember and apply.

The Playing Rules explain how a game of Peil Abú is played and seek to perpetuate the underlying Principles of Fair Play set out below:

(a)   to ensure that the game is played in a fair manner and with total respect for other Players and Match Officials;

(b)   to enhance the prevailing level of skill and involvement in the GAA;

(c)    to ensure that Players take responsibility for their own behaviour and that sanctions, if any, are imposed on a proportionate, transparent and consistent basis;

1.2   Application

These Rules apply to all games played under ‘Peil Abú’.

1.3   Playing Rules

1.      The game commences with a kick-out, from the hands, on the goal line.

2.      When a player is in possession of the ball a player may not travel more than 6 steps without either toe-tapping or bouncing the ball. A player may toe-tap and bounce the ball once when in possession before playing it away with the fist or foot. A player is not permitted to throw the ball.

3.      Physical contact is not permitted other than accidental/incidental contact.

4.      Each player shall wear two tags attached with velcro to a waistband, which is to be worn outside the jersey. These tags shall be located on the left and right sides of the body. Once one of a player’s tags is removed by an opponent he/she must hand over possession of the football to that opponent. The opponent recommences play with a free kick from the hand(s). Failure to hand the ball over i.e. directly into the hands of the opponent, will result in the ball being advanced 10 metres, or where the free kick is within 20 metres of the goals, being brought 10 metres toward the centre of the goal line.

5.      The ball may be lifted directly off the ground provided the player concerned is in an upright position. A player who is not in an upright position, may play the ball away on the ground with the hand but may not scoop it up to a teammate.

6.      Only one opponent may “tag/tackle” a player who is in possession. The focus of the opponent’s tackle is to remove the player’s tag without physical contact other than accidental/incidental contact.

7.      Sideline kicks are taken from the hand at the point where the ball crosses the sideline by the player nearest to that point. When playing Peil Abú in enclosed playing facilities e.g. cages, play only stops when a goal is scored, or a foul is committed - here play is continuous and there are no side line kicks or ‘45m’ frees.

8.      Breaches of the Playing Rules result in a free kick to the opposition.

9.      Free kicks are taken from the hand by the player who is fouled. The player nearest to where a technical foul is committed takes the resulting free kick.

10.  If play is interrupted due to injury etc. the player who last had possession of the ball shall recommence play by kicking the ball from the hand. Where there is a dispute regarding the identity of the player who last had possession of the ball the Goalkeeper nearest the ball at the time play was interrupted shall recommence play by kicking the ball from the hand on the goal line.

11.  Where a team plays the ball over its own end line, a “45m” kick is awarded to the opposition. The kick is taken from the ground on the halfway line, except in 15 a-side games, where it will be 45 metres from the opponent’s goal. This is not applicable when playing Peil Abú in enclosed playing facilities where play is continuous.

12.  3 points are awarded for a goal or when the teams are mixed gender females are awarded 4 points for a goal. 1 point is awarded for a score over the crossbar or when the teams are mixed gender females are awarded 2 points for a score over the crossbar. Only fisted points count.

13.  Penalty Kick – resulting from a personal foul within the scoring zone (large rectangle) or a Red Card infringement – are taken from the ground 11 metres from the centre of the goal line. Only one member of the opposition (the goalkeeper) is permitted to stand on the goal line. The goalkeeper is not allowed to move until the ball is kicked.

1.4   Playing Rule Adaptations

3.4.1 The Playing Rules may be adapted to cater for specific cohorts e.g. over-40’s in one half of the field; only female players permitted inside the 20 metre line; female players must have an involvement in the sequence of play preceding a score.

3.4.2 The Playing Rules may be adapted to provide for games of different durations e.g. two halves of maximum seven minutes per half with a two minute half-time interval, four quarters of maximum ten minutes per quarter with a two minute quarter-time interval and a five minute half-time interval etc.
